Sun Damage

What is Sun Damage?

It is very important to understand the effects of sun damage especially while living in a southern coastal area.  Sun exposure causes most of the damaging skin changes which are associated with aging.  The sun’s UV light damages the elastin fibers and collagen in our skin over a period of time.  You will notice sagging skin, stretching and loss of elasticity once these fibers are broken down.  The skin will also become more fragile taking longer periods of time to heal as well.  Sun damage does not become apparent for many years.  It is when you get older that you will see the effects of sun damage from when you were younger.

Different Types of Sun Damage:

-Age Spots – Age spots can also be called liver spots and solar lentigines.  Age spots are flat, gray, brown or black spots.  They vary in size and usually appear on the face, hands, shoulders, arms and decollate.  Age spots are most common in adults over the age of 40.

-Fine Lines and Wrinkles – Wrinlking in the skin is caused by habitual facial expressions, aging, sun damage, smoking, poor hydration and various other factors.

-Freckles – Freckles are clusters of concentrated melanin.  A freckles can also be genetic traits.  A freckle is flat, light brown or red and fades in the winter.  They are usually more common in those with light complexions.

-Rosacea – Rosacea is a skin disease typically appearing in people during their 30′s and 40′s.  It is marked by redness or flushing of the face and skin.  Small visible spider-like veins called telangiectasias also can occur.  It also is not uncommon to have hard pimples and pustules appear in the red or flushed area.  In later stages of the disease, the face may swell and the nose may take on a bulb-like appearance called rhinophyma.

  • Vascular lesions – Vascular lesions are a rupture or malformation of blood vessels near the skin’s surface. Common types include broken capillaries, spider veins, cherry angioma, and port wine stains.
  • Sallowness – Sallowness is a yellow discoloration of the skin.
  • Telangiectasias – Telangiectasias are small dilated blood vessels near the surface of the skin. Telangiectasias  sometimes are referred to as spider angioma or angioma. They typically occur on the face but can be found on other parts of the body.
  • Elastosis – Elastosis is a condition marked by loss of elasticity of the skin due to degeneration of connective tissue. Elastosis generally occurs in elderly people.

What is a Chemical Peel?

A Chemical Peel is a noninvasive, exfoliating treatment that relies on fruit acids, herbs, and antioxidants to loosen the “glue” that binds dead cells to the skin’s surface. It increases the production of collagen, improves the appearance of Acne, Rosacea, Environmental Damage, Hyper-pigmentation, Fine Lines & Wrinkles and Acne Scarring. The result is smoother, tighter, more hydrated skin, ultimately leaving you with a clearer, more youthful complexion.
